You receive the following error message when trying to generate a report:

“Unable to generate the report: Cannot establish connection to the Report Server.”

The report server cannot decrypt the symmetric key that is used to access sensitive or encrypted data in a report server database. You must either restore a backup key or delete all encrypted content.

—> Microsoft.ReportingServices.Library.ReportServerDisabledException: The report server cannot decrypt the symmetric key that is used to access sensitive or encrypted data in a report server database. You must either restore a backup key or delete all encrypted content.
—> System.Exception: For more information about this error navigate to the report server on the local server machine, or enable remote errors.

Make sure you specified a valid Report Server URL and you have the required rights and permissions to access the Report Server.

An encryption key can no longer be found or the key no longer works.

  1. Open Reporting Services Configuration Manager and connect to the SQL Server/Instance setup for reporting.
  2. Select Encryption Keys on the left-hand side.
  3. Select Restore if you have an existing encryption key to use, or select Delete and hit Yes on the next prompt to remove all encrypted content.
